Greenwich council homes approved

Plans for 32 new council homes in Greenwich were approved last night by Greenwich’s Planning Board by a 9-0 majority.

The unanimous approval will see new social housing on the site of the former Sam Manners House.

One issue is likely to be parking given the development is car-free. As we’ve seen at recently built council homes in Woolwich (covered last week) pavement parking with little enforcement is a real issue.

A parent with a disabled child has tweeted the council and council leader numerous times after failing to reach the council via telephone despite numerous attempts, and still today the same thing is happening.

It takes much time and effort to bring you local news. Adverts do not cover the cost and more and more browsers block them. To become a regular supporter click here.

After tweeting, the council’s outsourced parking contractor Wing Parking arrived, ignored those on the pavement and left.

There are still severe issues with parking issues and dysfunctional departments that councillors are not on top of. Every report in the world on reducing car use and encouraging walking means little if this continues unabated.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • I live on that street and there is no chance of parking on the pavement right now, and when they make the pavements even narrower (as per the designs), it will be even worse.

The only thing they can do to save the road is to close Mell Street as they initially planned.

    • Agree with u Yura, Mell Street should be closed as per the original plans. But maybe narrow pavements are intentional to prevent vehicles parking. Another great way is to plant trees, and fruit trees would have an added bonus!

  • More social housing is of course a priority, and 32 homes I guess will bring around 100 or so new residents. A drop in the ocean to what is needed but a start at least. But what’s the betting that another 100 patients to add to the GP surgery opposite will not lead to extra capacity there in terms of space (under social distancing) or doctor availability. Have they allowed for that in the plans?

  • Trying to get any response from Greenwich Councillors or Council is like pushing a rock uphill
