Major improvement work at Denmark Hill station underway

Work by Network Rail to upgrade one of London’s most congested stations is well underway at Denmark Hill.

New photos show work ongoing to build a new entrance and related earthwork, extended canopies to prevent passenger bunching and an 85 space, secure cycle storage facility.

It’s less than a decade since work was undertaken from 2011-2013 to construct a new ticket office on Windsor Walk, new walkways and lifts to the platforms.

Since 2015/16, passenger numbers increased from 5.6 million to 7.1 million in 2018/19.

Prior to that the station was even worse, with thousands of people trying to exit through a small doorway at the top of stairs. As a frequent user, it was an exercise in frustration every day.

It was also served by two-carriage Southern trains to London Bridge. Southeastern trains also used to be just four carriages in the peak towards Lewisham. Thameslink was four carriages. Not a great time, especially for patients heading to hospital near the station.

Other improvements include solar panels on the roof of canopies plus public artwork at the station in collaboration with the Camberwell Society and Camberwell Arts.

Work is expected to complete in August 2021.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • I remember using Denmark Hill Station when the lifts were being installed. The temporary steps were horrible.

  • The cycle storage is a good idea…but as the Mayor etc are pushing the cycling to everywhere the questuon is why haven’t every station the same facilities. How can you cycle to the station and nowhere to leave the bicycle
Paddington is the only station I’ve seen making a serious attempt at bicycle storage

      • The most horrible bike rack in the world is at Abbey Wood. Strip back the 90’s mural. Give us back some concrete reality. Not pretty, but real.
