Less photos & more action? Cycle lane blocked again days after PR blitz

It’s two days since a long-delayed project to provide a protected cycleway from Greenwich to Woolwich was announced involving various figures from Greenwich Council and TfL lining up for photos.

One little problem – the announcement was very vague on any action to protect cyclists using existing lanes from Charlton to Woolwich. It was mostly centred around Greenwich.

Today shows why it is badly needed throughout the entire route originally announced as vehicles are again parking on the lane in the exact same spot it is seen day after day after day.

Three vehicles parked up on lane today

Protecting this lane is a simple job and yet there is no confirmation of any action except a 24/7 bus lane/cycle lane – which hints at buses sharing a lane with cyclists. Not great for either and it needn’t be like that – at least in places where space already exists for a dedicated and protected cycle lane.

To protect takes no space away from buses or other vehicles. It’s just a case of installing some of these:

Low cost, easy, effective and the authority has never attempted to install them – and even now has not confirmed they will do so. The daily car parking continues.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • If my memory serves me right I believe the cycle lane along the Rochester Way in Kidbrooke as little wands protecting sections of the cycle lane. I do not think they are lit though like some cycle lane wards are nowdays.

I am not sure if they are still there or been removed.

    • Pretty tragic for cyclists that those dressing down in jeans for their pics for the Greenwich newspaper are the exact people that are failing the people of Greenwich and putting lives at stake. A little mention for the speeds cars do on this duel carriageway as there’s on traffic cam on the entire 4mile route and it’s approaching Woolwich roundabout… It’s very common to hear a car come up behind you doing 60+
