Thamesmead landscaping work partly completes

Area of public space in Thamesmead have seen new landscaping installed by Idverde as part of an effort by Peabody to improve the town.

New seating beside Southmere Lake brings to mind orange so popular in the 1970s. More than a hint of Clockwork Orange there.

The orange theme can also be seen at refurbished Lakeside pub which is now a community building including a nursery and studios.

Seating is located at a lovely little spot beside Southmere lake offering a great spot of new-builds going up. On the left is a new library and to the right are new housing blocks.

Landscaping work has also been undertaken in courtyards.

Now that’s a wide-angle shot

Thamesmead’s original housing has quite a few of these spaces. Many are dead space and unloved.

Access is poor

Raised grassed areas are often hard to access and play is discouraged. They’ve been retained though some sections are now landscaped.

More for seeing than using

Meanwhile demolition of homes along Harrow Manorway continues.

After years of slow progress Thamesmead has moved up a notch in terms of changes. Whether that continues remains to be seen. There’s still no application for homes along Harrow Manorway and timescales appear extremely slow.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • I really like the new seating by Southmere Lake and the orange actually does go well with the wood. I also like the landscaping to the Court Yards it really does make such a difference.to the dead for unloved space we normally see with public realm on estates not only on Thamesmead but around the Borough.

I am looking forward to seeing the new builds already under construction completed and hope that Peabody submit plans for the new development on Harrow Manorway in the near future.

I think a great job is being done by Peabody to improve Thamemsemad and that is just what the area needed.

  • Why are homes at Harrow Manor way being demolished when there are people who have no choice but to sleep on the streets?

I am familiar with Thamesmead and love the lakes and parkland but it is disgusting to demolish homes when there are people already without a home!

    • I do not know for sure why it was decided to demolish these propertie at Harrow Manorway. It may be due to building defects or the lay out of some estates also suffered from anti social behaviour etc.

So are being redesigned similar to what we have seen in Kibrooke with the Ferrier Estate and the new Kidbrooke Village

A lot of people did not like the design of the current buildings and nick named them concrete jungles. More homes are being built to replace the current homes that have been demolished.
