Fire hits Deptford block of flats

A fire broken out over the past hour at a block of flats in Deptford.

The top floor of a mid-rise block is alight. Emergency services are on scene and smoke is reducing.

It would appear to be a new-build block on Childers Street running parallel with railway approach lines to London Bridge station.

Eight fire engines and 60 firefighters are on scene.

UPDATE: There are now 12 engines as of 8:30pm. According to the London Fire Brigade:

“Twelve fire engines and around 80 firefighters have been called to a fire at a block of flats on Childers Street in Deptford.

A flat on the sixth floor and part of the roof is alight.

The Brigade’s 999 Control Officers have taken 34 calls to the fire.

The Brigade was called at 1926. Fire crews from Deptford, New Cross, Greenwich, Old Kent Road, Lewisham and surrounding fire stations are at the scene.

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.”

  • On the television news this fire was caused by someone lighting a BBQ on their balcony. So nothing to do with the build etc on this occasion.

    What stupity lighting a BBQ in such a confined space !!
