Plans to demolish recently closed Eltham GP surgery

Plans have been submitted to partly demolish Briset surgery in Eltham after the practice closed at the end of March 2020.

Dr Sennik retired and now plans are in to build two new homes with some of the existing building retained. No new GP surgery will be included. Patients were advised to register at other surgeries. The planning application states:

“NHS England are proposing a plan to centralise care and health facilities. The current plan is to move smaller surgeries like Briset Corner and merge them with larger local centres.”

This causes some obvious issues such as additional strain on transport networks and hinders those with mobility problems.

GP numbers fell by 340 across the country in 2019 . In 2015 Jeremy Hunt promised an extra 5,000 GPs by 2020. By 2019 there had actually been a fall of 4 per cent, a reduction of 1,088.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • That’s 3 in the local area that have gone in recent years; Dr Bassi 444-446 Rochester Way and the surgery in Tudway Road next to Kidbrooke Station.

  • The NHS should have kept this as a fully functioning GP surgery. As Dave rightly points 3 surgeries have gone from the local area.

A GP surgery is required at this location. It is hard enought to get a GP apppointment as it is when all three surgeries were open. It will now be impossible to get a GP appointment or get through to a local surgery to speak to some one.

This is despite hundreds and hundreds of new homes being built on the near by Kidbrooke Village with futher homes annouced on the site by Kidbrooke Station owned by TFL.

Further new homes are being built on Carnbrook Road with more new homes in the planning on the green junction with Carnbrook Road and Rochester Way.

We need more investment in the infrastructure around here both in more amenities like GP surgeries and Health Centres and public transport.

Large areas of Kidbrooke still do not have a direct bus route to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital despite GDH closing and the QEH opening as a NHS Hospital in 2001.

  • I agree we need more GP Surgeries not less in the Borough. Also agree with your points raised for a bus service to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for some areas of Kidbrooke I would include Roichester Way in this,

But we need to see more amenities and improvements to the public transport infrastructure around the Borough when you take in to account the amount of new homes recently built or under construction around the Borough In Kidbrooke, Greenwich, Woolwich, Charlton with large scale developments due to be constructed under the Charlton master plan.

  • I agree with the above comments. It is a shame that we are loosing GP practices within the borough. The NHS are proposing to provide a GP practice at Kidbroke which would be very beneficial. The NHS centralised care facilities in theory could be hugely positive in theory! As comments above outline it’s near impossible to get an appointment currently so if they can provide better and larger facilities this could be a drastic improvement. The existing GP facilities are dated, understaffed and relics quite frankly. Improvements need to be made.

The upside is the proposed scheme seems very well thought out and efforts have clearly been made for it to fit within the context. At least it will be nice to see improvements within the area as that junction most certainly needs it.
