Good news! Street works get underway in Greenwich

Good news today as work begins on widening pavements in central Greenwich with guardrails being removed.

Despite no official statement or announcement that I can see, I’ve checked and this work does appear to be for social distancing.

There’s no statement on what exactly it will comprise. It could well be plans announced earlier this week to remove the one-way system though what happens to bus stops is unknown. Or it could simply be widening pavements for now.

One way system in Greenwich

I’m not sure why Greenwich havn’t announced it yet as it’s good PR but anyway, a big well done to them. I’ve been very critical of no work getting underway to date nor much in the way of communication so credit where it’s true. Though even when it’s good news they aren’t the best at communicating it!

Well done to all involved. This will go a long way towards helping pedestrians and cyclist as many commuters are restricted from public transport at the current time. There are around three million daily public transport commuters in London. If even a quarter of them take to roads, gridlock will ensue to the detriment of emergency vehicles and business deliveries. Ensuring streets are usable for those who have other options ensures roads are free for those who absolutely need to use them.

  • Good news for everybody who lives and works in Greenwich. Hoping it is the full scheme removing the 60’s style gyratory.

  • I drove through the one-way system yesterday on my way from Lewisham to Greenwich. College Approach/King William Walk have been narrowed to single file traffic by the use of temporary barriers.

There certainly needs to be widening of the pavement on College Approach as it is difficult to pass people going in and out of the market without risking death or injury by stepping into the road.

  • Temporary barriers have been put up in the road in central Greenwich to widen the pavement. It has been done so poorly that the already dangerous intersections are now basically deadly for cyclists who are crammed up against revving cars and lorries. Its absolutely shocking that cycling has been completely ignored. If someone is seriously hurt or dies trying to do the right thing and cycle to work i would hope Greenwich transport officers are dragged into a court room to answer for these measures.

  • I drove through last night. The bus in front of me had trouble negotiating the tight left turn and had to hold the traffic up that was coming through the other traffic lights. While a good idea it is poorly planned at this stage

  • Yep, that is a very tight left turn onto Trafalgar Road and took me by surprise the first time I did it.
