Lewisham to Catford to see temporary cycle lanes introduced

Another announcement this morning of street changes included news of a temporary cycle lane on the A21 between Catford and Lewisham

The project is one of many across London. Another is temporary work on forthcoming Cycle Highway 4 between Tower Bridge and Greenwich which I covered earlier.

Catford

Catford is not a cycle or pedestrian friendly place. It’s again one of those areas with long-standing plans for changes bubbling away for years and which could still be many years off.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • So looking at some of the comments it appears that this has been in the pipeline for quite some time and nothing to do with what we’re told a result of post virus remedy. It seems TfL, lewisham council and cycling groups have been planing this for a while. What’s wrong all of a sudden with cyclists using the bus lanes on this route?

    • Any non-segregated infrastructure for cyclists will always make new and/or less confident cyclists nervous and less likely to travel by bicycle. Putting bikes in bus lanes mixes some of the largest vehicles on the road (buses) with some of the smallest and most vulnerable (cycles) which exaggerates this problem.

  • Saw the cycles painted on the road but no clear instructions or lines separating cycles. Which lane is left for car drivers? It is the most ridiculous things I’ve seen and a recipe for accidents, what next?
