Greenwich Auctions announces closure

After 20 years trading Greenwich Auctions is to close its doors after failing to agree terms with its landlord.

I recently passed the site near Greenwich power station and thought how nice it was for a business like that to still operate in the area. I was going to take a photo as I often do to illustrate future posts but didn’t as thought nothing much would happen to the site any time soon.

What a shame. A unique little reason to visit Greenwich has gone.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • I stumbled upon Greenwich Auctions when I went to a nearby kitchen countertop fabrication workshop. I subsequently went to an auction preview, but never attended the actual event as nothing warranted the registration fee.

I expect the site will be up for sale soon to be turned into yet more apartments on the nod from Greenwich council.

  • Shame the Greenwich Auction house has gone, used to be regulars until we moved out to Kent, have got some terrific lots from the auctions including paintings and odds and ends of furniture. Sad to learn of its demise -another little piece of history gone out of Greenwich!

  • Yes. I’m sad too. Robert is a delightful auctioneer, and they always had interesting things. You couod get a cup of tea and a bacon roll, then take a seat on an old pew and join the game. Will be missed!

  • This is a tragic loss – Bob was always entertaining and his team friendly and welcoming – bought many lots there and even turned a profit on a few – shame the landlord couldn’t allow things to run as this was a different outlet to visit within Greenwich – such a pity…

    • Some people like the landlord have no imagination or creativity.
This was one of the best original attractions in Greenwich.

WHAT A STUPID ATTITUDE AND IRREPARABLE LOSS TO THE AREA!!!

  • There was more to this closure than a dispute with the landlord you do not close an auction house overnight !! Very Fishy anybody know the real reason?

  • Whatever the reason for closure – it’s a real shame. Robert was a great auctioneer and the whole place had a welcoming, non-stuck up air. Yet sold some really nice things.
After 20 years – it really was one of the historical delights of Greenwich.

  • Very slow on the uptake but I don’t usually walk this way so was very sad to learn that we have lost the auction house and our entertaining auctioneer – I’ve nabbed loads of bargain here – does anyone know if they have set up elsewhere?

  • I was mortified to hear of this place closing when I heard last year. I was a regular for a couple of years.

Ii saw their van in Camberwell just a couple of days ago.

I’d hoped the lads were in it but no, another geezer driving. No relation.
    Great pity.

Best wishes to all the staff.

  • I always enjoyed the auctioneer’s having a bit of a go at his bidders (“his audience?”) if he felt they were falling asleep or nodding off. And the comedy bit he used to do about the piano hanging up on the wall. I once saw the auction featured in one of those bargain hunter-type TV shows . They sold high quality solid wood furniture, glass and beautiful persian rugs. They had an amazing delivery guy and the lady running the office was a star. There was a cafe that sold good cups of tea and toasted teacakes. Really good family run business.

  • your right you don’t close an auction overnight bet the auction house owes Landlord and people who put goods in Auction a lot of money……When you put goods in Greenwich Auctions you have to wait a month before they pay you

  • Greenwich auctioneer & valuer rubbish. Effectively “stole” all my parents belongings, sold for less than jumble prices. IE Coalport & doulton figures for £2 each whilst assuring me very valuable. When I complained about about missing antiques paintings mirrors etc got sent a nasty letter & £10.25?? Stuff I’d boxed to keep myself just disappeared and was disposed of next day – I didn’t get anything for £400 bronze? They were never available & disappeared too …. disgusting! Still livid years later.

  • Also their Landlord was Cutty Sark Enterprise? Ie invest in rental properties for upkeep of national treasure? They owed approx 1/4 million to creditors (do companies check to see) so as well as robbing old dead people & their relatives they ripped off museum. 43 years my mum collected antiques. House full including loft & shed £1200 ?? I expected about £20k ie chinese baluster vases £800? I signed paper believing it was for their insurance and prove not stolen – that it was what Rob stood in kitchen and said. I awaited estimates and opportunities for reserve prices. They weren’t there nor was our stuff. Believe they “sold” to themselves and flogged on at Sotheby’s or eBay etc. Still livid!
