Lewisham’s tallest tower: Work well underway

Groundwork is now well underway on what will be Lewisham’s tallest tower when complete.

The 35-floor block is to be located near Lewisham station and contains provision for a new station entrance, both to future Bakerloo Line platforms as well as Southeastern services.

Work now underway on this tower beside Lewisham station

It will contain 758 student flats in the main block. Another block of 20-floors will include 40 social-rented flats and 27 for shared-ownership.

The above overview shows a 34-storey tower in Tesco’s car park. That was recently approved on appeal.

Loampit Vale will see towers on both sides

The block is a few months behind schedule but once rising should rapidly become a feature. It uses modular construction which developers claim will see completion far quicker than through the use of traditional methods.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • Who will manage the 758 student flats? Will it be the Colleges or private landlords buying the properties to rent out at high rents?

It is good to see 40 social rented flats being included in the second block. These are very much needed.

However, Lewisham Town Centre is now becoming densley populated with out any real money being spent on improvements to the local infrastructure and public services GP Surgeries, Hospitals, Schools, public transport and public services like waste collection, Sewage, and other Council run services for the children, vulnerable children and adults, The elderly and disabled who often get forgotten when new developments are built and the local population increases.

    • I can speak about some similar student accommodation sites, they are owed and run by private companies. Some are run by the colleges (they tend to be the older established places).

You are right about the densely populated area – it’s been said by me and many others that this will have a negative effect on the area and nearby!
It seem everyone can see this except the council!

  • Slums of the future.

And 80% of the students will get 1st class degrees.

    Am I just getting old?

  • The makeshift car parks behind the Tesco store and nearby petrol station have now been barred to entry.

It is going to be permanent night for those living in the little houses on the footpath to the Tesco store. One person sold last year and I bet they were relieved to get the hell out of there.

@Ian, all of the new developments will be the slums of the future. You can already see the poor state of some of the blocks that are not very old.
