Trespasser causing major problems on Southeastern

A trespasser in the Hither Green area has caused long rail delays this afternoon and forced a cessation of services for nearly an hour.

Though now apprehended, the disruption will last into the evening rush hour according to Southeastern. Not what is needed with severe crowding on lines to to the closure of the Bexleyheath line this week.

10 car trains on a 12 car (almost) Metro network

That has led to increased pressure on the Sidcup and Woolwich lines. Southeastern have come in for criticism for failing to run many 12-car trains to compensate – even on services that avoid Woolwich Dockyard (short platforms) and certain platforms at Charing Cross (the same issue).

If Southeastern had new or upgraded stock these issues could have been avoided and 12-car trains would be able to run – but continual short term franchise extensions over the past six years from the Department for Transport have ruled it out.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • 12 car trains will help with issues of overcrowding on busy South Eastern services to and from Central London .

When is the current extension of the franchise due to expire?

Do we know how many other rail companies including TFL are biddding for the franchise?

If South Eastern win the franchise are there any plans for them to introduce new rolling stock?.

Services are set to get even busier with so many new developments under construction throughout South East London.
