Abbey Wood’s Maybloom Club to become flats under new plan

Plans are in to convert the Maybloom social club at Abbey Wood into flats shortly after it abruptly closed.

The club was only rebuilt in recent years which involved building a number of homes on parts of the site. This plan sees the club converted to residential use and increased in height.

The application includes some corkers such as the building being “within an area that is predominantly residential with a mix of Victorian properties from the 1960’s”.

That Victoria sure did live a long time.

The application would mean demolition of a community facility. Permission should only be granted “where the site is demonstrably unsuitable for continued use as a community facility.”

They claim it is as “during the new build of the club following demolition of the
existing 1924 building, the club lost in excess of 400 members. The Maybloom Club requires a new lease of life and it can therefore be demonstrated that the club is unsuitable for continued use as a community facility.”

Isn’t it obvious the club would lose members during a protracted rebuild? The issue is whether it can survive after completion.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • This was a con from the start , the acoustics are so bad in the new club you would think it was designed to make it unusable. This club has been a hub of the community for many years and has been robbed by most of the people involved. I totally reject the idea that this club should be converted into flats. This should remain a community hub. The wrong people have ensured it failed for there own financial gain . I was under the impression that the police were investigating. I would be happy to prove it can thrive under the correct management. Once it’s gone it’s gone.

  • I was a member for over 40 years along with other members kept in the dark about what happened to
The money the that the club and land was sold for.allways thought something fishy was happening
With the whole deal regarding sale and redevelopment.
