Greenwich Park Euro 2020 Fan Zone plans submitted

Further plans are in for a fan park on Greenwich Park for next year’s Euro 2020 tournament.

Plans see 30,000 people attending the site on each game day. The zone is located on a large site in front of the Queen’s House. On non-game days 6000-8000 people a day would visit to take part in various activities.

Tickets will by free and obtained through a ballot for all England and Home Nation matches. The event runs from mid June to mid July, and rather than hosted in one or two countries will see games played across the continent, with Wembley hosting semi-finals and the final.

According to plans:

“On Match Screening Days a typical programme will consist of, for example – pre-match entertainment, a band/artist/act to draw ticket holders in advance of kick off; live broadcast of the match; low-level entertainment during half time; pre/ post-match screen content (highlights etc); sponsor activations during the opening time; food and beverage sales.

Looking down to site

Provisional public opening hours on Match Screening Days are 10am (or later depending on kick-off time) to approx. 11pm (11:15pm if the Final goes into extra time/penalties and Trophy Live Ceremony).”

Gotta love those sponsor activations.

When it comes to transport talk of a shuttle bus seems to have been dropped. Instead it states:

“The existing network has sufficient capacity to accommodate people travelling to and from the Fan Zone, with the exception of those attending a late kick off (8pm). This can be mitigated through uplift in capacity (the DLR and Southeastern have suggested enhancing their services).”

Much scope to move DLR trains from other lines?

Presumably other lines lose carriages as both networks are already extremely stretched. Also, Southeastern may not even be running the franchise by the time it commences.

Back in 2012 services were altered but usage has grown sharply since then.

The application notes growth in local venues and unknowns around clashes. One example is the new Magazine music venue in Greenwich with capacity up to 10,000 people. Since opening in recent months it has hosted club nights using only internal space – though organisers are looking to host outdoor summer concerts and possibly festivals.

The event will use Blackheath Circus Field at the southern end of Greenwich Park (between Charlton Road and Shooter’s Hill Road) as a holding area for service vehicles with support equipment and facilities.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • Does anyone know if the rest of the park will be accessible (by the general public) from 6am? I tried looking at the documents but there’s alot of them!

    Thanks

  • With car parking severely restricted in and around Greenwich Town Centre. Will extra public transport and bus services be laid on for match days?

For example extra journeys on existing bus routes 129 177 180 199 286 & 386 serving Greenwich Town Centre and routes 53 54 202 and 380 which runs close to the Blackheath Entrance to Greenwich Park which many residents of the Borough would probably use to reach Greenwich Park.

Also will any accessible transport be laid for disabled fans who may require extra help and support to travel to the park to watch the matches?

If the weather is nice it will a great way to watch and enjoy the Euro 2020 matches. So lets hope for a nice warm summer in 2020

  • I loved the big screens on the heath and in woolwich town centre around the Olympic’s so this could be fun. I would suggest though that local residents have a separate ballot tickets as it would be majorly annoying if your life is disrupted and you don’t even get to see any of it!

    • That would be nice indeed. The only ‘event’ I was able to enjoy locally on that scale was to visit the Dome when it opened and try my luck with the ‘spend £1bn’ machine –
and not much else. I’m no football fan but I do enjoy the atmosphere when England are in with a good chance.

  • I agree Stephanie local people living in the vicinity of Greenwich Park and Blackheath who lives are disrupted when large events take place should have a separate ballot and a number of tickets set a side for them. This seems only fair to me.

  • 30,000 drunk fans coming out of St Mary’s gate on to Nevada Street and King William Walk (a highly residential area) at gone 11pm doesn’t seem very fair to me.
