Third big Woolwich crash in a week

A car was heavily damaged in an accident last night in Woolwich town centre.

Details are thin on the ground on what is the third serious accident in just a week in Woolwich.

Yesterday morning saw large delays as Woolwich Church Street near the ferry was shut in the morning rush hour due to a collision.

Yesterday’s accident site

A few days before that an accident near Premier Inn saw someone hit by a car. That spot has become notorious for drivers making illegal right turns heading towards pedestrians crossing with a green light showing.

After many complaints from local residents, Councillors visited and helped push for better signage from Greenwich Highways Department though it has appeared to make little difference.

One major obstacle was the inability to install cameras given Greenwich Council are just one of three London authorities out of 34 (including the City of London and TfL) to have never sought approval for their use.

See the bottom paragraph below:

That’s finally changed after years of talking but they will not be in place until later this year.

One of many new developments in local area.

Over the past week I’ve covered how yet another large Greenwich borough development – this one at Callis Yard – saw around £1.3 million come into council coffers with no apparent changes to dated road layouts in the area.

Well, not quite, as over the past week Greenwich council have started a project on Woolwich roads – but that scheme is simply to remove trees and greenery and pave them over.

This greenery is being paved over.

Oh, and one last thing. The authority has installed yet more guardrail near the entrance to the Royal Arsenal site forcing pedestrians to stand in the road waiting to cross. It’s as if 40 years development in design knowledge has passed them by.

Instead of looking at where pedestrians actually go, the Highways Department are attempting to cajole them into where they think they should go. Human nature doesn’t work like that. It’s a classic case of designing around vehicles rather than people.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • The Council didn’t seem to realise that the shortest route between the existing stations and the new Crossrail station is via the lights at the end of Woolwich New Road. They want the mega crossing used. This meant the banned left turn for the 161 and terminating 386s.

They seem so far adrift from pedestrians as well as public transport and road users.

  • I’ve filmed several cars turning right at the junction of Beresford Rd and Macbean St. I’ve nearly been hit by cars and several mopeds. I’ve forwarded the videos to the police, one driver decided to hurl abuse at myself and a father crossing with his pram. No response from the Police. And now someone has been hit by a car. All of this could have been easily avoided.

  • So many drivers are now ignoring red signals at traffic lights and pelican crossings, and this includes cyclist. Road speed limit signs are also being ignored, I live on a road with a 20 MPH speed limit but drivers think nothing of driving at around about 35 to 40 mph or even more sometimes banging their cars hard over the speed humps as they go.

We clearly have signs to say there is a school on my road but this even happens when the kids are going to or coming out of school.

CCTV cameras should be used to record all offences including motoring offences and where appropriate send out the automatic fines like speed cameras do. As a motorist I want to be as safe as possible has do other motorist, cyclist and pedestrians. As Matt so rightly said all these could have easily been avoided.
