Another stabbing in Woolwich

The knife crime problem in Woolwich continues with a 16 year-old suffering a stab wounds to the hand last night.

Police were called at 8:40pm and no arrests have yet been made.

The incident happened on Church Street which isn’t too far from the scene of large-scale disorder last month at Kingsman Street.

And last week two men were stabbed after a town centre fight.

Much of Woolwich is covered in CCTV – including some estates around Woolwich Dockyard – yet that seems to not act as much deterrent. While cameras are still operation police officer numbers have reduced – and a new command structure imposed covering three boroughs has met with with criticism that it’s lengthened response times.

Woolwich police station also closed in 2014 and is now flats.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • This is really sad to hear. The problem is really out of hand now. Everything possible must be done to get these knives of the streets. If this includes more stop and serach, dispersal orders etc then these needs to be done on a permanent basis.

Our streets were never like this when I was growing up. The problem as steadily got worse year after year I would say with the last 10 years being particularly bad. Now is the time to say enough is enough so we can make our streets safe for everyone.

  • CCTV is easy to bypass with a hoodie or baseball cap. Dark glasses and eyes looking downwards will only prove that the individual was in a certain place. At some point, coverage runs out and while police can use civilian CCTV as well as Ring doorbells, mostly it serves to determine what happened rather than to prevent it. There’s yet to be a deterrent that even a right-minded citizen couldn’t figure how to avoid. There’s no substitute for police on the streets: unfortunately police are public servants that need a decent wage, pension and this will not make an immediate profit for interested parties.
