Final housing plans submitted on Abbey Wood’s former Harrow Inn site

Revised plans for new homes on the former site of Abbey Wood pub The Harrow Inn have been submitted to Bexley Council.

The former locally listed pub was demolished at short notice and the site has lay vacant for many years since. The site, if approved, will now see 66 flats above shops.

Since early designs the size of the block has been reduced in height.

I’m probably in the minority here but I preferred the earlier plans. The final revision looks pretty dumpy and lumpen to me compared to the tapering early plan which had a bit more elegance in massing.

Peabody are behind this plan having purchased the site around 2014-15. Never known for being particularly quick, by the time it’s completed they would have owned the plot for around seven years. They plan for 36% of homes to be “affordable”.

The ground floor commercial unit could well be a small supermarket along the lines of Tesco Express. Once Crossrail opens more people are expected to travel to the area on bus services such as the recently introduced 301 route from Bexleyheath. Commuters could be expected to nip to the store before heading home on a bus.

Just over the road is the former Post Office site which also has plans for new housing.

The borough boundary runs between these two sites with the former Post Office located within Greenwich borough.

That is currently passing through the planning system with no decision made.
