Lidl begin hiring for new Charlton store

Progress on a new Lidl in Charlton has stepped up with the company now hiring staff for the site.

Approval was given to open in April. The store will take over the former H&M at Charlton’s Millenium Retail Park as well as River Island next door.

If memory serves, Lidl had a unit on the other side of Bugsby’s Way in the general area of Aldi which opened last year.

Lidl are hoping to not only capture some existing shoppers but attract those at new builds in the area. New housing at Victoria Way in Charlton can be seen to the rear of this pic:

Traffic plans for the new store predict 220 extra two-way journeys on Saturdays. The transport statement also predicts:

  • 30% of trips to the retail park will be pass-by i.e. already travelling on Bugsby’s Way
  • 60% of trips will divert from other local foodstores
  • 10% of trips will be new to the local network.

Bugsby’s Way is already at capacity at certain times:

An opening date is not yet confirmed though I hear the company is aspiring to meet an autumn/winter date to meet the Xmas rush.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • If I remember Lidl was in the old Comet building (up where Wickes is now). That one moved around 2000 or 2001 so it’s getting on for an anniversary return

  • Lidl Charlton was a popular shop back in the day. I am sure the new store will just as popular as before if not more so.

I still believe the new planned bus route 335 which is due to operate between Kidbrooke Village and North Greenwich Station should operate via Blackheath Royal Standard and Charlton to serve the Charlton Retail Parks on Bugsby Way.

  • I agree totally with CDT comments on both LIdl and the new 335 bus route serving Charlton Retail Parks, Lidl have greatly improved their stores of late,

  • Does Lidl know the main car park in front of that store is a gridlock nightmare during peak times? It’s such a poor layout, the whole carpark needing to exit through a set of lights with a very short change and no priority.
I’m sure most will simply park at Asda’s cor convenience, and probably just shop in Asda…

  • They need to sort out the car parking first as u can get a ticket by the time u get to the exit I never park there for that reason
