New homes planned on Plumstead High Street at Poundland site

Plans have been submitted to rebuild a row of shops along Plumstead High Street with work including 16 new flats to the rear of the site.

The site is 148-156 Plumstead High Street which includes Poundland.

Images in planning documents are so out of date they include Somerfield!

If I recall correctly it changed to a co-op long ago after they purchased Somerfield, who then vacated with Budgens moving in – and they didn’t last long.

These plans see alterations to the High Street facade and new building behind the site to accommodate flats.

It raises questions of access to the current stores. Deliveries can be made to the rear as things stand. If the narrow High Street is instead required that would create additional congestion and obstructions – particularly to buses.

As anyone who travels this way knows, it’s common for the road to be blocked by vehicles making it particularly difficult for buses to pass.

It is planned that car parking spaces will be restricted to those with disabilities.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • If this new development goes ahead. Yes it would provide new homes and give a fresh look to this part of Pumstead HIgh Street which is in need of a make over.

However, due to the amount of heavy traffic that uses Plumstead High Street including several bus routes a service road would need to be built behind the development for deliveries to the shops and entrance to the flats for residents and emergency vehicles.

    • I totally agree Graham. This will give the high street a much needed lift. Clearly investment would help to modernise the area. A service road for this new development on this stretch of busy road would greatly benefit.
