New DLR trains ordered and arriving from 2023

TfL have announced that new DLR trains have been ordered and due to arrive in 2023.

Last week the site looked at service improvements due in four years time including the Woolwich line seeing a 97 percent capacity increase and Lewisham branch 65 per cent.

Until 2023 its breathe-in time with Crossrail delayed until 2021. Some stations are seeing spectacular growth. Pontoon Dock, for example, has seen average monthly users rise from 70k two years ago to over 200k a month. The 3,400 Royal Wharf development is progressively opening and at least 1,000 more flats will be occupied soon both there and nearby sites.

Anyone who takes a trip on any branch can see the sheer amount of new builds. TfL actually tried to stop a Lewisham tower until new trains arrived. Yet a number of other towers are already approved and underway, including on the Carper Right site.

Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles, S.A will build the new trains which will offer walk-through carriages and include air con and USB charging points.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • Are these replacing both existing DLR trains or just the old ones from the 1990s

  • I am hoping all the trains will be replaced to provide the much needed capacity increase on the DLR. DLR is certainly getting busier and I guess will remain so even after the opening of the Crossrail (Elizabeth Line).. New developments around Lewisham Woolwich and in the East End are well underway.

Greenwich Station DLR and Greenwich Cutty Sark DLR did also see an increase in passengers following new developments there.
