Franco Manca to open pizza restaurant in Greenwich
Pizza chain Franco Manca is to open a branch in Greenwich town centre in coming weeks.
The chain is popular across much of London but like many chains has seemed reluctant to make the leap into this corner of SE London. It’s the first in either Lewisham, Greenwich or Bexley boroughs.
They offer sourdough pizzas at pretty low prices starting from £5. Not sure how well sourdough pizzas will go down with Greenwich’s leaders mind (*insert wink emoji here*).
The new branch will open in what was Simit bakery.
With a decent yet cheap pizza not costing much more than a Big Mac meal it’ll pull in the crowds.
By the way when looking for info on opening dates I saw people describe Greenwich as far out from central. Not an uncommon thing to see and hear. It’s 8 minutes on a train from London Bridge! I guess many take the DLR as it’s on the tube map which is a fair bit slower. I’ve always thought Southeastern could do a far better job highlighting how the world heritage site is to central London by rail.
I second your comment about efforts needed to highlight how accessible Greenwich is from the centre (although there are so many people there at the weekend that you do wonder).
The loss of Charing Cross trains doesn’t help tourists get to Greenwich.
Agree with ChrisL. London Bridge is not exactly tourist central so I think it’s a little misleading to quote the journey time from there. The loss of direct Charing Cross services still irks me although I am so happy to know I have a direct route to Luton and it’s environs now after the successful introduction of Thameslink….
I agree with you 100% Chris L the loss of the Charing Cross trains on the Greenwich Line does not help tourist getting in to Greenwich.
Also we are waiting to here any day now if the 53 bus is to be cut back from Whitehall to County Hall.
There are also plans to eventually cut back route 188 to Elephant & Castle sometime in the future. It also going to be harder for some local people to reach Greenwich Town Centre when route 180 re-routed to North Greenwich Station and the evening and Sunday frequency cut on route 286 in the summer to every 20 minutes.
So we get a really raw deal in Greenwich when it comes to public transport and have done for years and years.
I welcome the opening on the new Franco Manca Pizza Restaurant in Greenwich though and am sure it will be a great success.

On the subject of public transport i also believe the cuts to the Charing Cross trains on the Greenwich line have affected how tourist travel to Greenwich. A direct train from Charing Cross was by far the quickest way to get to Greenwich from Central London.
I cannot see why the brand new bus route being planned to operate between Kidbrooke Village and North Greenwich Station cannot be extended to serve Greenwich Town Centre. Parking in and around Greenwich Town Centre is difficult enough with not a lot of parking spaces available in the Town Centre.
