Flats planned for former Belvedere police station site

Plans are in to demolish the former police station in Belvedere and replace with a block of flats consisting of 26 homes, including:

  • 12 x 1 bedroom 2 persons Flats;
  • 4 x 2 bedrooms 3 persons Flats (2 Wheelchair accessible);
  • 4 x 2 bedrooms 4 persons Flats;
  • 5 x 3 bedrooms 4 persons Flats

31 per cent of flats are so-called “affordable”.

Closures

The former station closed in 2013 and was one of many to shut since cuts hit police budgets. To initially deal with cuts from the Home Office under Theresa May, the Met Police under Boris Johnson closed and sold numerous stations to hold up police numbers, but that strategy could only last so long.

Since that avenue has been exhausted, the next step under Sadiq Khan has been to close front counters. But that brings in marginal savings, and with the vast majority of funding coming from the Home Office now being cut, officers numbers have fallen from around 33,000 to below 30,000 in London and the lowest level per head of population since the early 1980s.

Spending on policing per person has fallen 20 per cent in London between 2013 and 2017.

A full list of closures is here.

Sidcup was sold in 2012. Woolwich and Greenwich too in 2013. Woolwich is being converted to housing and Greenwich into a hotel.

Homeland London Limited are behind this housing plan.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.
