Fire breaks out in central Woolwich

A fire has broken out in the middle of Woolwich. Photos show smoke near the tower on General Gordon Square coming from a 472 bus.

According to eyewitnesses it appears the bus caught alight on Thomas Street at an area around the back of Poundland on Thomas Street, which was formerly Marks and Spencer.

The fire brigade appears to have extinguished the fire which begun in the engine.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • Shows that TFL need to sort out these cuts, The bus in the photo is from the early 00s and these buses have run a full London Life and need retiring.

  • Hope everyone on the bus and the driver were all safe. I agree James it is about time these older Trident ALX400 buses are withdrawn from daily passenger service after nearly two decades of faithful service on London roads.
