Woolwich Elizabeth Line “super crossing” work to begin next week
Work kicks off on 13th August to construct a new “super crossing” in Woolwich linking the Royal Arsenal and forthcoming Elizabeth Line station to the town centre.
Plans show an extremely wide crossing leading from the new station to the Gate House by Beresford Square.
In recent months parts of the road surface have been replaced with tarmac.
Setts were previously used but couldn’t withstand heavy traffic levels.
Other elements of the recent reworking did not work. One such section was greenery in the central reservation. It quickly became stuffed with litter and was removed.
Yet similar will shortly be installed at £10 million road work at Abbey Wood by the Crossrail station there.
Other elements of the recent upgrade have not been well maintained including street furniture:
Hopefully lessons have been learned with the new plan being implemented.
Work is due to last three months.

Crazy Council yet again. 161 and 386 won’t be able to turn left from Woolwich New Road.
The shortest route between the new and old stations (and bus stops) is at the lights near M&S.
After 9 years of waiting, I’m looking forward to the Elizabeth Line finally opening. I don’t see any problem with the new wider crossing. Westbound 161’s towards the O2 will be diverted via Wellington Street and John Wilson Street as per the 2017 Elizabeth Line bus consultation. The 386 can make its way to its bus stand via Vincent Road and Burrage Road. No real hardship caused there.
Just wait for the delays to the 161 in John Wilson Street with queues for the ferry. BTW the consultation is yet to have the results published. The 386 diversion will add around 3-5 minutes to the travelling time and confuse people waiting for a bus in the other direction in Vincent Road.
This crossing is a nightmare given the distance from the traffic lights – in the rush hour there are always cars blocking it.
Thank god that road got tarmac over it. It was a nightmare on the bus driving through those craters
