Greenwich Council election results

This will be a very brief post given it’s being written on a phone with no laptop to hand.

The results are in and not much changed overall. Labour retain control. They held off strong green opposition in Greenwich Peninsula, and independents in Abbey Wood and Plumstead mostly came second above the Tories, Lib Dem and Greens.

They will hope to build upon that solid foundation in coming months and years.

In the south the Tories had a stronger night than some suspected and managed to retain seats Labour hoped to take.

Lib Dems did well to take a strong second in Greenwich West.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • No real surprise but now is where the independents, and even the rest of us, individually, start to put the greenwich council under some pressure.

    • The Labour Party record – here as notably in Islington – against prospective independent candidates is tantamount to a policy of total annihilation.
We need and are denied a credible opposition by a deeply undemocratic party machine focussed on securing its own hegemony.

Matters will be taken out of the council’s hands as their woeful ineptitude in addressing a panoply of social and community matters from dubious planning scheduling to policing is simply appalling.

  • Meanwhile over in Bexley, the Conservatives (unsurprisingly) remain in overall control. The north of the borough (Belvedere, Erith, Thamesmead, Slade Green) all went red while the south (Bexleyheath, Welling, Sidcup, Foots Cray) voted blue – roughly matching the party split of the elected MPs.
