Woolwich Waterfront car park to close soon as towers rise

Woolwich’s Waterfront leisure centre will see its current car park shortly close to make way for new towers from Berkeley Homes. The current parking spaces will be dispersed to three other areas.

The car park was sold to Berkeley Homes in December 2007 for £16 million. Since then Berkeley have slowly drawn up plans for the site which includes a number of towers, covered here, and work is expected to begin in coming months.

Towers planned on current Waterfront car park

210 spaces are provided at the existing car park. The 2007 land sale included an agreement for 140 spaces to be provided elsewhere. Berkeley have decided to provide 220 for a limited period. The sites are:

  • Adjacent to the Heritage Centre – 67 estimated spaces.
  • Rear of Beresford Street Premier Inn hotel – 74 estimated spaces.
  • Above the Crossrail station – 79 spaces.

The first 30 minutes of parking will be free to leisure centre users to make up for walking time.

Parking spaces for leisure centre users will only be needed for a limited number of years as Waterfront leisure centre will move to the site of Wilko’s at General Gordon Square. It will be part of a large mixed-use development incorporating hundreds of new homes with construction planned to commence in early 2020.

The existing leisure centre site will then be sold and new housing is a very strong probability.

The council document on car parking also includes details of a new park being constructed on the Arsenal site. Berkeley Homes will manage the new park until 2030 when it becomes the responsibility of Greenwich Council. It runs in a spine from the river towards the Crossrail station.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • How soon is ‘shortly’ and who sold the site, GLL or the council?

    • Greenwich Council sold it. GLL operate under license. Initial work is due before year end but expect it to be slow and delays are not uncommon

  • Shame about the leisure centre moving because I can almost guarantee the replacement won’t be as good as the current facility (see the move from the Arches with the loss of sauna, leisure pool and deep adult pool). Let’s hope this one isn’t also relegated to an inferior basement position.

    • Yep and with low cost gyms hammering council leisure centres, council’s need to stand out where they can, and that often means those services you mention.

  • Walked past last night, it’s a huge car park so will be great to see more construction added to Thames-side. Living in Maritime house, a pool over the road will be welcome.

  • what will happen to the footpath/cycle path immediately adjacent?

  • Thanks for this as always!

Do we know more about plans for the site where the current leisure centre sits?

You mention more housing, but other places mention some sort of low rise commercial space with restaurants etc. And a significant change to the road in front making the riverfront more accessible to pedestrians.

I’m concerned about my river view from the old Coop building!
