Thamesmead housing scheme delayed again
Plans to build 525 homes and a new town centre for Thamesmead at Southmere Village have been delayed yet again by Peabody. The autumn/winter 2017 start date has now slipped to late spring 2018.
It’s the latest in a number of delays. For about four years now heaps of rubble along with the stump of remaining buildings have remained in situ. This includes the old library.
In more positive news the badly neglected and arson hit former library buildings and last few flats will be coming down within weeks. Scaffolding is now covering the structure.
The footbridge over Yarnton Way is also due to come down in half-term week this month.
In related news, five potential library designs have been revealed for the site.

I think we all hoped that Peabody taking over from Gallions was a positive step however so far they have been no better. On a positive note I like the first option for the library design. Let’s just hope it happens!
I hate that they are taking down those bridges based on some manufactured, absurd reasoning — at that, leaving nothing in their place (at least that’s what happened with the bridge at the library). I use and see people using the three bridges and the elevated walkway by the towers on Yarnton Way regularly — kids are riding their bikes and scooters on them. Why would we want them gone? The fourth one was demolished years earlier..
Besides, with the towers being torn down soon anyway, why do the residents have to endure more disruptive construction works right now? Why then not demolish everything at once?
