Bus cuts to 472 from September?

Thanks to a reader who contacted me regarding potential cuts to the 472 bus route from September this year.

It’s not a huge surprise as a recent TfL consultation raised the idea as had information gleaned from certain planning documents recently, though as one of the highest frequency services to the o2 at North Greenwich it will impact upon many.

In 2017 TfL suggested reducing the 472’s frequency from 12 to 7.5 an hour (15 buses over the busiest two hour period):

The exact frequency proposed in future is not confirmed. It appears peak vehicle requirement could reduce from 20 under a 2014 agreement to 16.

Tfl state the reduction will be compensated by a diverted 180 from Lewisham to North Greenwich at one end and a new 301 route from Thamesmead to Abbey Wood at the other.

Both those changes have been pushed back due to Crossrail’s delay, so there’s every chance the 472 change could be pushed back further from September.

The 472 serves Ikea which opens next months and St Mary Magadalene school – which opened in October 2018 with its first 450 pupils. That will increase to 1,600 by 2020/21.

A new music venue on Greenwich Peninsula planning to hold 200 shows a year for up to 10,000 people is also due to open in spring/summmer 2019.

  • Although the 472 is due to be re-routed to Abbey Wood in line with the Crossrail opening, I do understand why they need to cut the frequency on route 472. The route will stay remain very busy in both directions towards North Greenwich Station and Abbey Wood.

i cannot really see the changes to routes 180 and new route 301 compensating for this. .I always thought it would have been better to have route 472 serving Nathan way as at present with new route 301 serving Broadwaters Estate to provide new links here.

Do we know how many new bus stops on Western way route 472 will serve?

    • It won’t serve any bus stops along Western Way. It will run non stop between Plumstead Garage and Belmarsh Prison

  • The 180 changes are ridiculous, they should keep the route as it is, to Lewisham, there’s no need for another bus route to serve the
    Abbey Wood/Thamesmead-Woolwich-
North Greenwich corridor, the 180 is the quickest route between Abbey Wood & Woolwich to Lewisham, not to mention the 177 will be majorly overcrowded as far as Greenwich

  • LOTS (London Omnibus Traction Society – the group for London bus enthusiasts) reports in its monthly magazine that the 486 will be reduced on Mon-Sat to every 10 minutes from 23 February. It is also mentioned that the night service that runs at weekends is being considered for withdrawal. While I have not seen this mentioned elsewhere, LOTS is an impeccable source.
