Another co-op food store in Greenwich set to be approved

Greenwich Council are likely to rubber stamp a new co-op food store at a meeting to be held tomorrow.

The new store is located in a block within the River Gardens development in east Greenwich.

Progress on the development has been very slow. In the 12 years since approval, only around 75% of 667 homes have been constructed. Many retail units have lay empty for years, so this is welcome news for residents:

Plans for a riverside pub from award winning local brewery Tap Room were scrapped after some local people complained it would be noisy. Tap Room have now decided not to proceed.

Many other units in the development remain vacant.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • The new CO-OP store will be convenient for local residents. Many people now decide to shop daily or every couple of days so they can budget better if on a set income and to avoid food wastage where food is bought but not eaten and thrown away which happens when you do a large shop. I think the new CO-OP store will be a success for local residents.

I hope the other retail units can also be let soon and put to good use.

  • I would love to see more shops and vibrancy brought to the area. I struggle to understand why these places remain void for so long. Looking forward to Co-op opening. Please put self service tills in though!
