Tower beside Greenwich ecological park blocked by council

I’m a bit late to this one given a recent cold and it’s been covered in many other places, but anyway, plans for a tower beside an ecological park in Greenwich were refused by Greenwich’s Planning Board this week.

The original tower was reduced in height in an attempt to gain permission:

But this was still deemed detrimental to the adjacent park.

Building continues on other stages nearby:

I did expect refusal in the lead up to the vote given there’s scope for developers to bulk up forthcoming blocks away from the park, which is what I expect them to do.

Much empty land lies to the south close to Ikea which are latter stages of development.

Developers now have the choice of appealing against strong local opposition or increase density in less contentious future areas.

Given outline plans at 20 floors have been approved by the council previously, if developers did appeal they would probably have a strong chance of winning.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • Too little, too late Greenwich Council. It has already set a precedent by previously approving a 20 storey building.

The belated realisation that there may just be too many highrise buildings blighted the borough is not going to help when the developers appeal.
