Contentious Canary Wharf tower approved after appeal
Firstly, ok, yes it’s not technically Canary Wharf but the Isle of Dogs.
Anyway, a 332 flat residential tower topping out at 49 floors has just been approved after initially being rejected by Tower Hamlets Council.
The site, at 225 Marsh Wall, is east of many towers, both complete and rising. However, Tower Hamlets had already approved a tower just to the west and Dollar Bay slightly east, so a rejection was always liable to fail at appeal.
The council had stated:
‘The proposed scale, height and massing would result in a development that fails to present a human scale of development at street level, is too large for the plot size, is overbearing, is unduly prominent in local views and detracts from the low-rise character of the area to the south and east.’
The appeal judgement states:
‘The site is in a location identified as appropriate for a tall building,’ he said. ‘This proposal would deliver a high-quality, high-density residential development and public realm on Marsh Wall, complementing the tall building cluster in Canary Wharf while respecting its existing surroundings.’
There are plans for a tower at Skylines Village just over the road.
