New cinema coming to Catford at Poundland site

Really Local Group have secured permission to construct a new cinema in Catford on a 23,000 square ft site.

The cinema will seat 205 across three screens showing both independent and blockbuster films.

In addition, a café, bar and live music venue will be on site as well as recording studios and a food court showcasing local independent food vendors.

Work is due to start next month and complete in May 2019.

A number of cinema are planned across south east London. Eltham will see one open early in 2019, Bexley Council are planning one in Sidcup and at least two in Woolwich (Spray Street and Island site).

Workspaces for 12 artists are to be provided alongside 12 flexible recording studios with Ten87 to local musicians and producers.

Damien Egan, Mayor of Lewisham said: ‘It’s exciting to be getting set to welcome the return of a cinema to Catford. Catford always had a historic tradition as a cultural hub in south London. We want to revive that tradition. The cinema joins the Catford Beer Festival, Catford Jazz Festival and the new independent restaurants that are opening in the town centre. Catford has a real buzz and things are set to continue to improve.’

Preston Benson of the Really Local Group, said: ‘We are delighted to announce our plans for the new Catford Mews. For decades the residents of Catford and the wider area have been underserved with respect to leisure offerings and this motivated us to launch this new multi-functional space.

‘It will be affordable, pay the London Living Wage and will grow prosperity by providing employment for local people and addressing the lack of creative workspace in the area. Building on Catford’s cultural foundations, it will celebrate the area’s diversity and be our contribution to revitalising Catford town centre.’

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • This is good news for Catford the area needed regeneration. The new Catford Mews development with cinema, live music venue, recording studios, artist studios food court, cafes, bar and restaurants planned on this site will be great news for the residents of Catford and bring a new evening and weekend economy to the area. While creating new jobs for local people can only be a good thing.

I agree with anonymous201486 that Lewisham Town Centre could also do with a cinema complex as part of the on going development of the area. This would also help the evening and weekend economy around Lewisham High Street.
