Woolwich Equitable building finally emerging from scaffolding and looking wonderful

Here’s some good news after the bad of Crossrail’s delay. Woolwich’s Grade II Equitable Building is finally emerging from the scaffolding that has shrouded the building for years as the conversions of upper floors to housing and offices completes.

I adore those elegant green window frames

And what a gorgeous building it is. Imposing in a stately way with a Portland stone exterior overlooking General Gordon Square, which is now far better since improvement work in 2012.

It’ll also be a big boost to the Coffee Lounge shop, which as had some issues recently, and the Equitable, which is a lovely place. Good food, good drink choice, characterful interior and live music and events on many nights. Exactly what a pub should be like.

The building was built in 1935 for the Woolwich Building Society which eventually left to Bexleyheath before Barclays took over and shut it down. The Bexleyheath building is now Bexley Council headquarters.

Barclays took over the Woolwich in 2000, made it the mortgage-only brand in 2006 when they closed the Bexleyheath HQ, and then finally erased the name in 2015 which had existed since 1847 when the mutual was formed.

  • Very nice and would be even nicer if they shut down the betting shops in the building and near by!

  • Good to see the Equitable building in being fully refurbished and looking good with the portland stone exterior. It is a very fine building and a part of the history of Woolwich.
