Abbey Wood man convicted of fraud offence related to fake carer role

For the second time today, someone in Abbey Wood is making the news due to fraud. Earlier today it was a woman who is accused of using the Grenfell tragedy for money laundering, and this afternoon comes news that a man has been convicted of acting as a fake carer and claiming over £24,000 in payments from Greenwich Council.

Charles Dickson, of Bastion Road, claimed to be a carer for a Mr Z. Investigations revealed Mr Z had spent over three years out of the last five in Ghana, whilst Dickson had submitted forms claiming to be caring for the man.

Mr Z has refused to return to the UK to answer questions.

Dickson was ordered to pay back £24,118.00 (which has been paid), a fine of £2,887.52, victim surcharge of £150 and 220 hours of unpaid community service plus a three month curfew. He also received a 20 month sentence suspended for two years.

Jude Raynor at Woolwich Crown Court stated that he considered Mr Dickson to be “a thoroughly dishonest man” and that he was “a wolf in sheep’s clothing and has always been dishonest.”

A Greenwich Council press release is here.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.
