Lavish new temple planned in Belvedere

Plans are in for a new Sikh Gurdwara in Belvedere.

The current site is utilitarian industrial looking structure. A previous plan in 2015 is now being scaled back to the current proposal, which is still far more elaborate than the existing building.

A Gurdwara has existed on site since 1979.

The planning reference is 18/00436/FULM

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • I’ve always thought it was a shame that the Gurdwara building doesn’t quite live up to the promise of the elaborate archway at the entrance. The large Sikh community in Belvedere will be happy to have a new building – and to be honest, why shouldn’t they have a place of worship as elaborate as many of the churches in the area?

    • I would worry if the design of the building will fit in with the local area, also the size of the building and if It has ample parking (you only have to see the Gurdwara behind Wilko’s in Woolwich when there is a large function).
There will be issues if parking isn’t suitable for relatively large number when there are big functions ie weddings – I say that as a Sikh and know how busy it can get!
The Gurdwara in Gravesend works very well (I recommend every go – beautiful architecture and free food!), as there is open space around the building and ample parking, however if it was in a more enclosed area is will become more of a nuisance and eye-sore for local residents.

I just hope the right balance can be struck.
