Iceland to open new store in Charlton through Food Warehouse cash and carry concept

Plans are in for a new Iceland superstore at the former Dreams store at Stone Lake Retail Park in Charlton. The new shop is part of Iceland’s Food Warehouse concept.

Like much else in Charlton it’ll be in a big retail shed. It won’t do much to alleviate concerns of ever increasing traffic and congestion in the area.

It’ll also raise further questions of whether both Asda and Sainsbury’s would stay in the town if they merge – whatever Sainsbury’s Chief exec is now saying.

Food Warehouse is a spin off from Iceland’s normal model. It kicked off in 2016 and combines the usual frozen food store range with bulk sales along the lines of a cash and carry. So more vans and trucks. Footfall and car visits will exceed the previous Dreams store by quite some way in all likelihood.

The planning reference is 18/0983/A

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • There’s a Food warehouse along the Old Kent Road, but I have never been in there because I am always going passed on the bus. Do you really think this would threaten BOTH Sainsbury’s and Asda? I really can’t see Sainsbury’s closing that big Charlton store.

    • No just Asda. If the competition authority tells them to lose one store the dated 80s box will go. Asda also at cheaper end of market which competes with Iceland and Aldi

  • Agreed, it should be Asda.

  • If Asda Charlton store does close I just hope the shop floor staff can be redeployed in other stores around the area whether that be in Sainsburys store or another Asda Store.

  • I do not think Greenwich Council pay enough attention to the increase in traffic congestion and added pollution in the area when new housing developments are built and when new retail sheds open. We have seen a cut to our bus services in real terms over the last year long with changes to train routes and timetables. So I cannot really see people in Greenwich ditching their cars for public transport anytime soon. However, I do think the Iceland Food Warehouse will be popular with local residents in the Borough.
