Eltham housing block back before Greenwich planning board

Greenwich Council’s main planning board will next week take another look at plans for housing behind the High Street on Orangery Lane.

The site is currently industrial land and sits amongst a large amount of car parking.

Greenwich Council had previously blocked plans last September for a block of nine floors. This has been revised to seven stories and 42 flats.

Previous proposal

The plan raised much controversy, and still appears to, with the Grade II listed Orangery building opposite the site. Though the massing tapers now down to three stories opposite the Orangery.

So-called affordable housing is just 21% with no social housing. The previous social housing level was just 15%, but that wasn’t a reason for Greenwich Council’s previous refusal.

The site is designated for housing in the Eltham masterplan

More people living in the vicinity of the High Street will offer a boost to shops and hopefully increase the vitality of the town.

A number of good pubs have opened in recent years and the cinema is coming along which will improve the night-life economy, which has been pretty dull for a major town centre.

On the flipside retail appears to be struggling at times and Debenhams recently closed, though they have problems nationwide. TK Maxx has replaced them.

The planning reference is 17/3843/F

  • Are we to have yet another of these prison style blocks of flats overshadowing what is left of what is left of a really good high street all the shops are leaving while they can and the high st is hardly ever busy anymore no one shops there the road layout is awful and dangerous to cross such a shame for what was a lovely place to end up like this

    • How on earth is a new block of flats going to harm a high street? New homes bring more people, with money to spend on the local high street! What a ridiculous argument!!
