New market in Greenwich approved alongside school expansion and new homes

Plans for a new design district and market near the o2 have been approved.

Eight architectural practices are behind 16 buildings across the site. The number of workers, including artists and those in creative industries, could reach 1,800 people.

The design district replaces the current well-used park. It’s a shame the huge swath of car parks in the area couldn’t be converted to parkland as an interim measure when the design district opens in 2020. There is the park further south but this severs it from the students and visitors to the o2.

Each architectural practice has designed two buildings, and they did so blind with no reference to what other studios were working on.

New housing

Further south and 112 new homes were approved at Greenwich Millenium Village’s next phase.

It appears pretty austere with a few splashes of colour seen as a nod to earlier stages.

The yellow/orange sections shown above are currently under construction.

The darker orange block is the site of a controversial tower proposal beside the ecological park.

A planning application for this is expected soon. Greenwich Council agreed that the site was suitable for a tower back in 2013 when an overall masterplan was approved.

Transport, again

New residents may struggle to reach trains and tube. Buses to North Greenwich could be cut under TfL plans and the walk to Westcombe Park station is off-putting at best. Greenwich Council still seem reluctant to do much at all to improve conditions for those on foot or cycle in this area.

School expansion

And finally, plans to expand the Royal Greenwich Trust school in Charlton from 600 to 950 pupils were approved.
