Three new shops planned for Plumstead Scout Hall site

Three shops with flats above are planned at the site of a scout hall on Brewery Road in Plumstead.

Its’s currently a scruffy site and the plans show a new building with frontages facing onto Brewery Road and Waverley Road near to where the street forks into two.

A better building here could do much to improve Brewery Road, which is a bit tired both here and closer to the High Street.

I wrote before about how the road could become an attractive destination with modest investment in the public realm with adjustments to parking, new paving, less street furniture clutter and the addition of trees. There’s lots of scope that isn’t being realised.

This development could bring in some cash to the council, but even if it’s not sizeable enough there’s no shortage of other cash to improve Brewery Road and Plumstead High Street.

On the stretch shown above some low-cost improvements such as tree planting, new and uniform paving and better lighting would increase the attractiveness of the area. A cafe could act as a meeting point for the local community. There’s no shortage of homes nearby and potential footfall.

Greenwich still havn’t announced much of where £3.5 million they’re given by TfL this year will go. Then there’s the £13.7 million they’re given by central government this year through the New Homes Bonus. In addition there’s at least £12 million from Section 106 and Community Infrastructure Levy money  coming this year.

There’s still unspent millions from previous years’ income.

Surely they can find modest sums from that income to improve and rejuvenate a busy street around Plumstead town centre. There’s no doubt many locals want it but appear to hit a brick wall when contacting local Labour councillors and council staff.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • I welome this new development to improve the area around Brewery Road and Waverley Road in Plumsread. I am also hoping the funds are found to improve Plumstead High Street and some of the smaller shopping areas which have been overlooked by Greenwich Council for years.

Whenever, I have contacted a Labour Councillor on an issue. I have never received a reply, The Brewery Road and Plumstead High Street area are long overdue for improvement. I hope they receive some of the cash so the improvements can be started in the very near future.

    • What councillors didn’t respond? You’re far from the only one to say that by the way

  • The Labour Councillors that never replied to me are:-

Norman Adams, Christine Grice and David Stanley

Also John Fahy when I have written to him on behalf of a relative.

  • 20 years overdue! I had no idea there used to be a scout site there.

The drawing suggests that it won’t go into Waverley Road but the article says it will? Will the corner café be demolished as part of the scheme?

Now, what else they need to do is close down the two betting shops opposite and give the area to be give a deep clean. While they are at it there is also an unsightly tree stump and railings by the chippie that need to be sorted out.

    • Not only that, but there’s always a crowd and a skunk-laced cloud outside the betting shops there, which makes using that stretch of road really offputting.
