More details on proposed Lewisham towers

Legal and General are consulting on plans for new towers in Lewisham. Preliminary plans showed towers up to 26-storeys. The latest information is for one 24-storey tower amongst a collection of smaller blocks.

525 homes are planned across the development at the site of Lewisham Retail Park. Legal and General do not yet own the small parade of shops on Loampit Vale and are in discussions with the owners:

Commercial units are proposed at street level but will ridiculous rents simply render them empty, as has happened at many other new developments?

Consultation on this development is underway today, Thursday 3rd March from 4-7pm at Glass Mill leisure centre, and also Saturday 5th from 11am-3pm.

This consultation only covers the island site. The site over the road beside the station which comprises Carpet Right is believed to be coming later. Preliminary scoping reports were submitted for that site last December. A 25-storey tower and 260 homes were being looked at, along with a new station entrance.

It’s not known whether a Bakerloo Line extension to Lewisham in 2030 with require that site. It does however appear that the chance to utilise many recent developments to help fund an extension has gone.

On the subject of additional transport demands these developments continue to place, the Department for Transport still havn’t approved more trains for Southeastern despite the rail company requesting them last June. The DfT said they would decide by March.

Even if approved, they are older trains from Thameslink which do not have selective door opening to cope with shorter platforms, so whilst welcome they cannot be utilised on certain lines.
