New view of Woolwich Tesco

A quick update as I’ve just seen a new view of the Woolwich Tesco development. It shows a tower facing onto General Gordon Square.

Looks as though the square will be surrounded by towers, what with the proposal for a hotel tower by the train/DLR station.

EDIT (Summer 2012): This is not what is now under construction. The tower is not going ahead at this moment. Nor is the twisting building just behind.

  • this comment is not really about buildings, i’m only saying hello having just stumbled across your site.

anyway, i may as well ask if you’ve seen the rotunda? i’d be interested to know what you think about a building that’s half-tent; although judging by past-form it’s new buildings you’re writing about.

  • Hello! No I don’t think I have seen the rotunda. I will get googling and have a nose.
I have written rather a lot about new buildings and proposals so far, but I didn’t intend to write solely about that. Just making it up as I go along at the mo!

  • I like the way the square has been painted green to match the smaller buildings to help tone in the absolutely massive tower block in with the background.

Lets just hope they retain alot of the greenery on the square……………

  • The towers would have been even higher had their not been objections from the Connaught Mews Residents Association they would have blocked out sunlight and god knows what else.

As it is it is now a less dense development but it will realign the town centre further Eastwards I can see Boots Relocating from their current store and may be New Look too meaning more empty shops westwards despite TK Maxx taking the soon to be refurbished ex Burton Corner

There will certainly be less retail than there is now in the Western part of Powis Street with both the Travelodge taking retail space away bar three large retail units and the former Art Deco Coop Department store to be converted in to luxury apartments

    • Really? What height was the original plan? It must have been huge to reach that far south the to Mews.

I guess its a fait acommpli but at least I hope that the obersavation deck at the top is open to the public. It would be great if the top 3 floors were commercial units. There must be a great view from up there.

  • Apparently Spenhill currently has no intention of going ahead with the tower and commercial units (phase 3) in front of Tesco, although they obtained planning permission for this back in 2006. The site currently is a green public space with new trees planted and street lamps erected. Does anybody have any updates on this, as this would affect the square let alone the view of residents in the area should it go ahead?
